Software should be as open as the internet and be as platform agnostic as possible. Screw this devs way of thinking about software, hardware and users. Screw non specific software that is tied to hardware. There could have been cross device video chats, SMS fallback, and so on, but no we have taken 2 or 3 steps back. You could talk to anyone on any platform, service, or client(AOL, MSN, ICQ, etc). XMPP was great and could be made even better. A lot of us complain about Hangouts and how iMessage is better. This developers way of thinking is what has caused chat client fragmentation. I hit submit too soon: remember that if you can't legally change it or give it away to someone else, you don't own it even if you paid for it. As a user you should be prepared to pack your bags.

These companies can't and haven't hit a home run every time. Pay those developers that support software freedom and have a method to pass the torch when they no longer want to work on the project.Įvery platform and app has ups and downs over time (except maybe Linux since it just keeps getting better and can be whatever you want it be).

Don't use apps and services that aren't cross platform or open source if you can help it, unless they are platform specific like smartphone apps that wouldn't really work/have a point on desktop. I've had old Macs, OSX, the majority of flavors of Windows, and more Linux distributions than I can remember and spent a lot of time and money on many platforms and products.ĭon't get tied to a platform.
